Things to know about gorilla trekking in Uganda: | Gorilla trekking in Uganda in 2027

When is the best time to go for a gorilla trekking trip in Uganda?

Uganda has two safari seasons in a year, the high season which is also referred to as the dry season and the low season which is also referred to as the rainy season: The Rainy season falls during this season falls into March to May and during this season the grounds/terrains are slippery the weather is very cold and therefore fewer tourists trek mountain gorillas during these months. The high season falls in June to August and October to November. These months attract a lot of clients who come for gorilla trekking because the weather is always conducive, and therefore makes the gorilla trekking adventure more fun.

Acquiring a gorilla trekking permit

A gorilla trekking permit is the document that gives any tourist, whether international or local, access to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for an encounter with the Mountain gorillas. The gorilla’s trekking permit is issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority on behalf of the government. The permit cost i  fixed at 800 dollars per person per trek. The gorilla trekking permits are issued all year round, with only 08 permits issued for a gorilla family in a day.y

The gorilla trekking permits are available in both the dry and the rainy season (low and high seaso;n) however, the peanuts are sold very highly and on very high demand during the peak season (the months of January to February and June to AugusThethe reason for this is that the peak season has a very conducive climate together with very good weather that enables tourists to take on trips well with great opportunities for clear pictures of the Mountain Gorillas and the Bwindi jungle: –

How long is Gorilla Trekking: –

Because Bwindi is an extensive jungle and Mountain Gorillas keep moving from one location to another all the time, it’s therefore difficult to know what time one might spend in the jungle in search of the Gorillas. The Gorilla trekking adventure can take anything between 01 hour to 08 hours depending on where the Gorilla where last seen the previous day.

The Uganda wildlife rangers are always available to help our clients track these gorilla giants, and the assurance is that regardless of how many hours you spend on the trail, you will definitely be able to see the mountain gorillas.

What to do after finding the mountain gorillas

Every tourist is granted a full hour with the mountain gorillas after locating them in the Bwindi National Park jungle. In this one hour, you are allowed to take pictures and videos of the gorillas and share them with your friends back home. During these one hours with the gorillas, you are not allowed to eat, drink anything, or even share anything with the gorillas.

When taking pictures of the gorillas, you must make sure that your camera flash is off because a camera flash irritates the gorillas.

In that one hour with the gorillas, you are not allowed to be very close to them, and the reason isthate those primates easily catch colds: -Whenn your one hour with the Mountain Gorillas is done, you are led by the ranger guides back to the starting point, and here, you will meet with your Safari guide and back to your lodge for lunch. Marking the end of your jungle gorilla expenditure Adventure

How do Mountain Gorillas feed?

The mountain gorillas spend almost a quarter of their day eating and mainly feed on plants. About 80%of the feeding diet is made up of leaves and stems. They also mix their Diet with larvae, barks, snails, and sometimes rotten wood:

When it comes to drinking water, Mountain gorillas are not fans of water and therefore, they do not always take water. They survive because the plants they always consume contain water in them, and therefore this helps them to survive: –

How do Mountain Gorillas gather food: –

The Mountain Gorillas are the giants in the jungle, and they therefore use the unique strength to bend tree branches to gather fruits and also take tender leaves, They eat a little in a selected area and then after allow the growth of new vegetation as they get to another place and when feeding, they complete anything they have gathered for meal from where they are feeding.

How Difficult is trekking Mountain gorillas: –

The following factors make tracking mountain Gorillas difficult,

The cost of a Gorilla trekking permit alone is 800 dollars per person. This is before additional costs like the cost of transport and accommodation are added to the mix. This cost scares away most people and makes gorilla trekking difficult.

The location of Mountain Gorilla families

The Mountain Gorilla is very difficult to allocate sometimes, as they graze very far away from the park headquarters and from the trekking tracks. The time and season of trekking adventure can be done all throughout the year. However, the year is divided into two seasons,t: he dry and peak season, and the wet season or low season.

The months of June to September and December to February are the best months of the year to go gorilla trekking because in these months the weather is dry and helps clients to hike easily without any disturbance, like slippery trails, while in the jungle.

The age limit on gorilla trekking

Since gorilla trekking is a very tense activity that involves hiking to look for gorilla families, the activity requires mature people who are energetic enough and should be above 15 years of age and above. Kids below 15 years of age are not allowed to go gorilla trekking as they might find difficulties and problems in the jungle.

The accessibility of the National Park

The fact is that finding and accessing Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is not an easy task, this is because the National Park is located very far in the hilly places, which are not easy to reach. This makes most clients avoid the journeys and therefore end up not trekking the mountain gorillas.

What to wear for a gorilla trekking adventure

This is a very important part for someone to think about while thinking about a gorilla trekking adventure in Uganda. Bwindi is so cold and therefore any gorilla going tourist must prepare him or herself to carry what to help them during these moments.

Below is what to carry for your gorilla trekking adventure, depending on the season

Hand gloves to protect you from thorns

Light trousers

Rain coats with head coversLong-sleevedd shirts to protect you from your itchy vegetation

Waterproof gumboots and light shoes

Rules for the orilla trekking adventure

Avoid mimicking the mountain gorillas while you are next to them

Do not feed the Mountain gorillas

Do not make noise while around the mountain gorillas

You must keep a distance of at least 7 meters from the Mountain gorillas

Are gorilla sightings guaranteed | Gorilla trekking in Uganda in 2027

Gorilla sighting is only guaranteed if a client is willing to task themselves to hike up into the jungle and actively participate in looking for the gorillas. Finding Mountain gorillas is sometimes luck because the gorillas sometimes graze too far miles in the jungle. However, because the mountain gorillas are closely monitored, no one has ever failed to find them, and in case a visitor fails to allocate them, Uganda Wildlife Authority is ready to make a 50% refund of your gorilla trekking permit cost.
