Gorilla Groups and Permits in the Ruhija Area.

In southern Uganda, near the border with Congo, is Bwindi Forest National Park. Trekking to view the world’s majestic Mountain Gorillas in their native environment is possible in only two Ugandan national parks. Famous and ideal for mountain gorilla trekking, it is home to almost half of the world’s surviving wild Mountain Gorillas.

The gorilla tracking experience is available in many regions of Bwindi Forest National Park. Various habituated gorilla families are available for tracking in Bwindi Forest National Park. There are around 18 individuals in a typical gorilla family, and the dominant male gorilla, known as the Silverback, heads up each group.

You must possess a Gorilla permit that is valid for the day of the walk in order to go on the adventure. There is a daily cap of 8 visitors permitted per gorilla family in Bwindi Forest National Park, hence gorilla permits are in high demand.

Bitukura, Oruzogo, Mukiza, and Kyaguriro are the four gorilla families found in Ruhija Sector of Bwindi Forest National Park. You can go gorilla tracking with any of these families, but you’ll need to plan ahead because there are only 32 permits available each day.

Unlike Rushaga and Nkuringo in Bwindi Forest National Park, the topography in Ruhija sector is not very mountainous and steep, making it an ideal location for gorilla trekking. For this reason, it is an ideal destination for elderly tourists and those with mobility issues.

While visiting Bwindi Forest National Park to do gorilla trekking, travelers may choose from a number of reasonably priced lodges in Ruhija to stay in or pitch a tent with a group. The majority of these lodging options are conveniently located near the Ruhija sector entrance to Bwindi Forest National Park, where gorilla trekking adventures begin.

The Uganda Wildlife Authority, an agency of the Ugandan government’s Ministry of Tourism, is the only authority authorized to provide such licenses. The Uganda Wildlife Authority has evaluated and approved a revised fee for gorilla permits. The Family of Oruzogo Gorillas.

One of the recently habituated gorilla groups available for gorilla trekking is the Oruzogo family in Bwindi Forest National Park’s Ruhija section. They are more than 23 members strong and have two silverbacks.

Tourists will have a blast during their visit to this group because of the abundance of toddlers and adolescents who are often fun and engaging. You must get a gorilla permit in advance if you want to be one of the eight group members that visit this group daily, just as with other groups.

Family of Bitukura Gorillas.

There are fourteen members of the Bitukura gorilla family, including two silverbacks. The river that the Bitukura family was initially seen on provided the inspiration for the group’s name. Given the high frequency of encounters between the UWA rangers and the gorillas, the habituation process for this group, which began in July 2007, was rather easy. Despite the fact that habituation typically takes at least two years, travelers might be able to visit this group as early as fifteen months from the start.

Gorillas of the Kyaguriro Family.

It wasn’t until 1999 that the Kyaguriro Gorilla family was habituated; at the time, Bwindi Forest National Park was off-limits to those interested in gorilla trekking. As with other gorilla families, it has been routinely monitored so far. Over fifteen mountain gorillas, including two silverbacks, make up this troop. Because of its long history of supporting mountain gorilla study and conservation in the Great Virunga ranges—the sole home for the world’s surviving mountain gorillas—Bwindi Forest National Park is home to a unique gorilla family.

Gorilla Family Mukiza.

After separating from the Kyaguriro gorilla family, the Mukiza gorillas are a relatively new addition to the Ruhija sector gorilla groupings. More than ten mountain gorillas and one silverback make up this troop. You may still undertake gorilla trekking with this group in the Ruhija region of Bwindi Forest National Park, even after it split off from the Kyaguriro group.

You may reach Ruhija sector by road via Kigali, Kampala, or Entebbe. To reach Ruhija area, you’ll need to take a murram road that often necessitates a 4×4 vehicle due to its uneven surface and slippery conditions during rainstorms. The route begins in Kabale Town and branches off the major Kabale-Kisoro highway.

It is two to three hours’ drive from either Kisoro Airstrip in Kisoro District or Kihihi Airstrip in Kanungu District, the two domestic airports closest to Ruhija area.
