Kigali-Nyungwe Forest National Park: Day One
Our driving guide will pick you up from Kigali International Airport after a brief welcome and safari area orientation. A stop at Kigali’s Genocide Memorial Centre will precede your transportation to Nyungwe National Park.

After arriving in Nyungwe in the afternoon, explore the Gisakura Tea Estate after lunch and check-in. At the tea estate, you may drink fresh coffee and learn about coffee cultivation, harvesting, and processing. After seeing Gisakura, we’ll eat and stay at the lodge.

Day 2: Chimpanzee trekking and canopy walk
After a full breakfast, you’ll be taken to the park headquarters for a briefing and separated into eight groups to hike with the chimpanzees. Make sure you’re on time to start the walk at 8:00 am with a lead guide. The family’s travel to Nyungwe’s 80 habituated chimpanzee groups may take one to six hours, depending on their location.

You spend an hour with the chimpanzees after finding them. You could witness baboons, red-tailed monkeys, colobus monkeys, and L’Hoest monkeys. Before the next activity, you will be taken to a safe place to have your lunch or rest at the lodge.

Day 3 Volcanoes National Park Transfer | Gorilla and chimp trekking

On Day 3, our last day in Nyungwe, we will check out of the lodge and visit Volcanoes National Park after breakfast. In Volcanoes National Park, have lunch at our resort and then climb to Twin Lakes with a guide. After that, we’ll have dinner and stay at the lodge before hiking the next day.

Day 4: Gorilla hiking and Iby’iwacu culture.
A morning meal at the lodge will allow us to visit the national park. After learning about the trek’s rules, you’ll be assigned to gorilla families and separated into eight groups. The park hikes depend on your family.

The duration of the trip depends on numerous factors, including walking speed and gorilla tracking time. You discover the gorillas, spend an hour with them, then return to headquarters. After lunch and leisure, you may get your gorilla trekking and conservation certificates.

Our gorilla expedition ended with an Iby’iwacu culture visit. Near the national park, the hamlet helps rehabilitate poachers and offers them alternate means of livelihood. Meet the people, get to know them, and return to the lodge for dinner and the night after viewing ethnic dances and listening to traditional music.

Day 5: Kigali Transfer/Departure
After breakfast, your guide will drive you to Kigali. Your five-day Rwanda gorilla and chimpanzee tour ends with transport to the airport or your hotel.

Rwanda’s lone gorilla trekking destination is Volcanoes National Park, a two- or three-hour drive from Kigali International Airport. Over fifteen habituated families and 400 gorillas live in the national park. Volcanoes gorilla trekking is available year-round, however December–February and June–September are the driest.

Mountain gorilla hiking requires a permit since no other identification will get you in. Whoever buys permission sets the price. Non-resident foreigners pay $1500, Africans $500, and EAC nationals $300. Visitors who register in advance for Nyungwe Forest National Park and Akagera National Park get a 10% discount, while conference attendees who book in bulk enjoy savings.

Two to six hours may be needed to hike gorillas, depending on the family. However, you must first attend a lecture where they explain trekking rules, including the fact that no more than eight people may visit a gorilla family each day. Nyungwe Forest National Park is Rwanda’s most popular chimpanzee trekking destination, second only to gorilla trekking. Chimpanzee tracking involves traveling through the jungle for one to six hours to discover habituated groups. Chimpanzee walk safaris in Nyungwe allow visitors to see thirteen primate species. At Nyungwe Park’s chimpanzee habituation experience, you may observe them more.

Rwanda Development Board hike permits are the only way to see chimpanzees. Tourists must buy permits in advance to climb the two chimpanzee families. Except in emergencies, don’t carry much clothing. Avoid military camouflage, pack green or brown, blue for tsetse flies, and black for heat. To avoid mosquito bites and tree scratches, wear loose, long-sleeved shirts and jeans. Avoid jeans since they become bulky when wet.

Strong ankle-length hiking boots are essential for the walk. Though they don’t have to be new, they should be tight enough to avoid toe blisters, robust enough to withstand the hike’s slippery trails, and waterproof. The muddy and difficult terrain makes this gorilla walk unsafe in shoes or sandals.

Bring lots of big, soft socks and gaiters since pants are commonly tucked up to keep bugs out. They keep you toasty and nettle-free on cold mornings. We propose adjustable gaiters for wet weather.

Safaris need phones, cameras, and binoculars. A camera, cleaning equipment, binoculars, extra lenses, and batteries are included. It’s encouraged to carry a camera, however experienced guides will help first-timers.

Wear a hat and sunscreen. Bring sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat since it may be hot.

The main attraction of Mgahinga is gorilla trekking, although safari-goers may also do other activities.

Mgahinga is well known for gorilla trekking, although golden monkey trekking is second. As the inquisitive golden monkeys hunt for food and water, you have a fascinating and amusing experience. Walking with golden monkeys is easier than with mountain gorillas since they live at lower heights. The park’s new golden monkey habitat is open year-round.

Trekking lasts three to six hours, depending on where your golden monkeys are. Players with golden coats, and golden monkeys may be found anywhere on the body. Follow all golden monkey hiking rules. Must have Golden Monkey Trekking Permit. Post-hiking, visitors must spend an hour with the monkeys, stay 7 meters away, and not use flash photography.

To protect the gorillas, the Batwa people—pygmies—were forced out of the national park, but tourists may now meet them. Tips are not included in the safari price, but they are a vital part of it, therefore travelers should bring cash (local currency preferable) to pay their guides. Do tip the porters who help you carry your bags for a stress-free gorilla hike, driving guides, and room service. This additional fee shows gratitude for your services and is worth it.

This depends on your anniversary, but we’ll look at Rwanda’s peak/dry and wet/low gorilla trekking seasons. June to September and December to January are the greatest months for gorilla trek safaris in Rwanda, although service operators raise fees owing to the huge number of visitors. If you visit Akagera National Park and Nyungwe Forest National Park on your gorilla trekking safari, Rwanda provides a $1050 per person discount. This is the only time the deal works.

Tourists should arrange gorilla permits six months in advance due to strong demand.

A happy wedding anniversary with Rwandan gorillas requires proper packing. Below is a list of items to bring for the walk.

Cameras and binoculars are devices. Any camera will work, although we recommend a lightweight point-and-shoot. A tripod, spare lens, batteries, lens cleaning, memory, an additional camera if feasible, and a camera bag are also needed. You can observe gorillas, birds, golden monkeys, and other primates in the national park using binoculars.

Clothing: packing clothing is difficult since you may have a lot to carry and not want to overpack. To enjoy your Rwanda gorilla hike, bring the proper outfits and colors. Tsetse flies are drawn to blue, so don’t pack it. Black camouflage, associated with the army, absorbs heat. Long-sleeved shirts prevent bug bites and tree scrapes and keep you warm. If you don’t wear jeans, non-jean pants are better. Bring undershirts also.

Keep your legs toasty and keep mosquitoes out with thick socks. Before the walk, tuck the pants into the socks.

Hikers may avoid scrapes using garden gloves.

Because Uganda’s weather is unpredictable, take a thick sweater and rain gear for both seasons.

For Volcanoes National Park treks, sturdy ankle boots are advised. The shoes don’t need to be fresh to fit properly and prevent blisters. Ensure they are robust enough to keep you on your feet throughout the walk and buy waterproof ones if possible.

You may also bring sandals and shoes to wear at your hotel/lodge after the trip. Take adjustable gaiters while buying shoes, especially in the rain.

Ugandan tap water is dangerous, but your safari includes bottled water. You will need a refillable water bottle of at least a liter to carry water on the journey.

Insect repellent: protects skin from insect bites.

Sunscreen and a sunhat: Apply your preferred sunscreen before the walk. Sunhats and sunscreen may be carried in the bag for reapplication.

First Aid kits: Hotels/lodges usually provide these, but you may bring your own. Emergency supplies including painkillers, gauze, spirit, iodine, cotton, and plaster should be in the pack.

Day backpack: You can’t carry all your stuff, therefore this bag will hold your daily essentials. The day backpack should be waterproof and hold basics like:

Visitors planning a gorilla trip in Rwanda must obey the Rwanda Development Board’s requirements, which include:

Trekking minimum age: Rwanda prohibits gorilla trekking under 15 years old. This is because children are harder to handle and may break rules. You may bring the kids to other activities than gorilla trekking.

No more than eight persons per day may hike with a gorilla family to minimize illness transmission and disruption of their routine.
After finding the family, each group spends an hour with the gorillas.
Visitors should stay 7 meters from gorillas.

Loud noises and sudden moves near gorillas are prohibited. Communicate in low tones.
If a gorilla approaches, follow the guide’s instructions: don’t run and bow to indicate submissiveness, and don’t stare at it since it may be a challenge.
Keep the national park clean by avoiding littering. All trash should be carried out of the park and placed in designated containers.

Eating and drinking around gorillas is prohibited. You may consume snacks in authorized spots.
Smoking is prohibited for gorilla trekkers and visitors.
Tourists should turn down the camera flash before snapping images of mountain gorillas because it scares them.

Following group assignment, the trip begins with a guide and porters for those who require them and lasts 2–6 hours, depending on family location. You shouldn’t worry about not seeing the gorillas in Uganda since it’s never occurred.

After finding the gorilla family, you spend an hour with them learning about their human interactions and taking photographs and movies. Return to the headquarters for a certificate of participation after one hour. Anxious gorillas may cut the hour short.

Uganda Wildlife Authority and travel operators sell gorilla licenses. Uganda no longer reduces low-season permits, so reserving one at least six months before winter break is best. UWA determines gorilla permit prices according to visitor type, making them lower than Rwanda.

East African natives pay 300,000 ugx for a gorilla permit, while international residents pay $700 and non-residents $800. The Rushaga sector gorilla habituation costs $1500 per person and allows you four hours with the gorilla groups. Permits cost the same wherever you get them.

Contact the tour provider to get a permit, then provide your passport information, name, and birthdate, and pick your winter break trekking days. The tour provider verifies the availability of your preferred dates. After confirmation, you’ll be provided dates and payment instructions.

To prevent scams, understand that no purchase will be performed without full payment. Pay the corporate bank account, not yours. After payment is verified, the permits will be purchased and a copy delivered to you for evidence. If the tour organization arranges the full safari, fees are due three weeks in advance.

Gorilla permits are non-refundable unless you observe no gorillas while unusual hiking.

Your safari will begin with a list of rules and instructions to follow. It’s crucial to understand and follow Uganda’s gorilla conservation guidelines.

After finding and communicating with gorillas, each party spends an hour with them. Gorilla habituation lets you spend more time with gorillas. After purchase, the gorilla habituation permit cannot be switched to regular gorilla trekking.

The Uganda Wildlife Authority set a 15-year age restriction for gorilla trekking to safeguard primates.
A maximum of 8 trekkers may see a gorilla family each day. Gorillas are highly overwhelmed, thus only 8 people are allowed.
After meeting gorillas, avoid rapid movements and loudness. Gorillas’ stillness and noise may be seen as an assault.
Gorillas cannot be photographed with a flash.
Sick people, particularly those with sickness and cough, cannot journey with others.
If you need to cough or sneeze when among gorillas, turn aside and cover your mouth and nose.
Trekkers must always keep 7 meters from gorillas.

Without proper attire, walking in a thick forest is difficult. Uganda’s brief dry season in winter requires proper attire for gorilla treks. Comfortable clothes are needed for the endless trip to find the gorillas. Trekking attire is listed below.

Strong, durable hiking boots. These should be ankle-length, waterproof, and durable for muddy treks.
Long-sleeved shirts keep you warm and prevent mosquito bites and scratches.
Dust, dirt, and water may damage the upper legs, hence gaiters are necessary.

What to know before booking a Rwanda winter break gorilla safari

Research Rwanda, including its languages, currency, what you can and cannot bring, and other basic restrictions. All travelers should convert their money for the Rwandan Franc (RWF) before arrival for convenient transactions. Some places take credit and Visa cards, but you’ll need local cash to transact.

With its current road infrastructure, Rwanda is simple to navigate. To make traveling easier, tour operators organize 4×4 safari cars to pick you up from the airport and drive you across Rwanda till the conclusion of your safari. Taxis and buses convey visitors to Volcanoes National Park.

To improve communication, Rwanda uses Kinyarwanda, French, and English. Swahili is also spoken locally. You cannot carry plastic bags into Rwanda for a gorilla safari.

Gorilla permits are non-refundable and good just on the days assigned. After one hour with the gorillas, they expire and cannot be used again.

A gorilla safari in Rwanda is ideal during the dry season, which is winter in other nations. You must be 15 to hike gorillas in Volcanoes National Park. Your passport copy from the booking will be used for age verification. However, if you are fit, there is no upper age restriction.
Keep 7 meters away from the gorillas after finding them. This prevents visitors from infecting gorillas.
The briefing will divide tourists into groups of eight, which is the maximum number permitted to hike a gorilla family daily.

Each group must spend one hour with primates after finding them. Gorillas are protected by the one-hour limit, but if they act out before then, you must leave.
Volcanoes National Park must be clean, thus any trash and items brought in must be disposed of properly.

Consider asking for a machete, digging a hole away from the throng, and covering it up after using the restroom (particularly number two).
When among gorillas, be quiet.
If you become unwell on gorilla hike day, volunteer to skip it. To avoid killing gorillas, unwell tourists are not permitted to trek.

You cannot eat, drink, or smoke around gorillas.
Avoid flash photography, which is illegal.
Stay away from gorillas and avoid eye contact.

What to carry on your Rwanda winter break gorilla trek
Clothes: To blend in, Rwandans value decency and, therefore pack well. Gorilla safaris are jungle-based. Long-sleeved shirts for warmth and protection, lightweight trek pants (not shorts or jeans), undershirts, long socks for warmth, and tucking in trousers should be brought. The walk requires garden gloves to prevent blisters and other injuries.

Bwindi National Park Fly-in or Drive Safari:  Kampala to Bwindi is 530 kilometers and takes 8–9 hours by vehicle. Stop at the Equator to capture photos on both sides of the world or at Mpambire Royal Drum Village.

Safaris are another roadside attraction. Lake Mburo National Park requires overnight stays. This park connects all western Ugandan national parks.

Daily flights from Kajjansi or Entebbe Airport to Kihihi Airstrip. You must book a seat and arrange a transfer car.

Driving or flying safaris are now available at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has airstrips on both sides for modest planes. Clients may fly to Kisoro Airstrip in southern Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and drive to Nkuringo or Rushaga in 2.5 hours.

Tourists may fly from Entebbe to Kihihi or Kayonza Airstrip to monitor gorillas in the Ruhija or Buhoma flanks of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Driving from Kayonza to Buhoma takes 45 minutes, whereas from Kihihi Airstrip it might take two hours. Three hours should be plenty to hike gorillas in Ruhija’s Eastern Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Kampala to Buhoma or Ruhija takes 8–9 hours by car, while Nkuringo or Rushaga takes 9–10 hours. The drive from Kampala to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is lovely and full of sights. These include stops at the equator crossing, royal drum making, seeing his pastoral group graze ankle-long-horned cattle, and the undulating hills of Kigezi.

Flights from Entebbe to any park side might take an hour or more, depending on connections. Fly Uganda and Aerolink Uganda are the primary airlines serving Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and others. Aerolink conducts morning and afternoon flights from Entebbe to Kihihi, occasionally connecting to other national parks. The quickest route from Kampala to Buhoma on Bwindi. After 390 miles, take Murram Road for 82 km. Driving takes 8 hours.

Kampala-Kabale-Ruhijah-Buhoma

It takes 3–4 hours to travel 95 kilometers on a murram road from Kabale to Ruhija to Buhoma. As the road is under development, only a 4×4 vehicle may pass through during wet periods.

Kampala to Kabale to Nkuringo, the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, is 105 kilometers. Winding roads take four hours to traverse this distance.

You may spend the night at Kisoro, 80 kilometers from Kabale, and then drive 35 kilometers to Nkuringo for a briefing in the morning.

Kampala-Kabale-Kanungu-Buhoma

You drive 414 miles on a tarmac road from Kampala to Kabale in around 6 hours. Connect with a 150-km murram road from Kabale to Kanungu to Kanyantorogo for 5 hours. This route may have impassable roads, requiring a 4×4.

Queen Elizabeth National Park to Buhoma, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

On a wildlife safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park, you must drive 160 m from Mweya, the park’s administrative center, to the Buhoma section of Bwindi Park.

When staying in the Ishasha area of southern Queen Elizabeth National Park, anticipate to travel 64km. Check the fig trees for tree-climbing lions.

By Air

Kihihi and Kisoro airports get daily domestic flights from Entebbe or Kajjansi. The morning and afternoon flights may carry up to two individuals.

The Queen Elizabeth National Park
Stop at Queen Elizabeth National Park for a night or two before visiting Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Early morning game drives via several tracks are available here. Beautiful crater lakes at the bottom of the Rift Valley are reached via the crater lakes trek. Most notable is Lake Nyamunuka, which smells bad since animals die there and is termed the animal hospital.

Lions that feed on Uganda kobs spend the day on the Kasenyi grassland trail. Catching prey may be difficult here.

Lake Katwe is Uganda’s oldest business. Miners still gather salt with their bare hands. Pans of dried salt are collected by customers and taken to marketplaces nationwide.

The Kazinga channel launch lets you witness the park’s most stunning sights from the Rift Valley bottom. A clear day may see the snowcapped Rwenzori mountains. Lions, buffaloes, elephants, leopards, water bucks, bushbucks, and others frequent the channel’s banks. They bathe and satisfy their thirst here. Foreign migrants and flocks of birds frequent the coast.

The bridge from Queen Elizabeth National Park to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park may be washed away by strong rains, thus you must check its status.

Kibale National Park
On your Africa vacation, Kibale National Park is great for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking. The park provides the best opportunity to see many chimpanzees in the wild, especially during harsh rainy seasons when they eat trees. The best way to Fort Portal is via Mubende.

Despite its numerous attractions, chimpanzee trekking is its main point. The park features the most habituated mountain gorillas in East Africa and primate species in Africa.

A $300 per-person chimpanzee hiking permit is required. Chimpanzee trekking is available morning or afternoon. One chimpanzee community may host six visitors every session. Find the chimpanzees and have one hour to see them. Follow all chimpanzee trekking guidelines as taught by the warden during the briefing. Its major briefing point is Kanyanchu tourist center and a secondary location is Sebitori.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is accessible after chimpanzee trekking. It may take 6 hours to reach Buhoma.

Since your accommodation will likely be in the sector you reserve, know it before booking.

Gorilla hike permits may be bought from the Uganda Wildlife Authority or a local tour operator. Buying via a registered travel operator is better since contacting UWA directly may take time. You must submit your name and journey dates before checking whether permits are available. After we confirm the permits are available, you must provide payment using corporate bank information, not personal ones.

Gorilla hiking restrictions
The Uganda Wildlife Authority set trek and gorilla guidelines. Mountain gorillas and hikers are protected by these measures:

Each trekker must be 15 or older. Because it’s impossible to discipline kids and make them obey rules, no one under 15 may journey. They cannot concentrate on watching primates.

Maximum 8 persons each day trek a gorilla family. This prevents crowds from disturbing gorillas.

Tour guides often bring machetes to remove overgrown bushes throughout the trip, so when you need to use the restroom, dig a 30cm-deep hole away from your group and cover it up to prevent sickening the gorillas.

You should maintain a distance of 7 to 10 meters from the gorillas after you’ve found them. Even though the gorillas may want to get closer to you, you should do your best to avoid touching them. The gorillas will be more relaxed if you give them some space.
