Discussions with the Uganda Wildlife Authority Board of Directors were launched by the newly formed committee at the Association of Uganda Tour Operators. As a consequence of a signed agreement of cooperation, tour operators may take use of AUTO’s cheap gorilla permits via their Association.

The Auditor General recommended that the Uganda Wildlife Authority do away with the 10% commission that was previously charged to AUTO for all licenses purchased by tour operators from the authority. After that, AUTO would get 10% to use for its day-to-day operations. As a result of this being halted, tensions rose between the Uganda Wildlife Authority and the Association.

The process of AUTO DISCOUNTED gorilla approvals

The Uganda Wildlife Authority reviews the number of permits booked and paid by AUTO Members every three months. For every 30 permits bought, AUTO receives one complimentary gorilla permit.

When more gorilla permits are purchased every three months, AUTO receives additional complimentary gorilla permits. Members obtain these permissions at a discount once AUTO acquires them. This is the process for distributing AUTO discounted gorilla permits.

Distributing Gorilla Permits at a Discount via AUTO

The AUTO membership will be notified by official email once the organization has received the reduced gorilla permits. Before distributing the permits, they have a look at what’s available. The distribution of responsibilities should be based on a first-come, first-served basis.

It is recommended that members purchase their reduced gorilla permits online, specifying the location and the precise day of trekking. Payment must be made one week after the booking date. When some tour operators don’t collect their fair amount, members are free to buy additional permits.

Tour operators in Uganda are required by law to choose the cost of licenses; currently, AUTO Discounted gorilla permits are USD450 per month, down from the regular USD800.00. This implies that AUTO members may receive a discount of USD250.00 every gorilla permit.
