Chimpanzee trekking in Rwanda is an activity that involves entering the thick forests of Nyungwe in Rwanda for an encounter with the Chimpanzees in their natural Habitant. For this adventure activity in Rwanda, you are escorted into the forest with very well-trained Ranger Guides and researchers who will lead you into the Jungle in search of the chimpanzees following the trails left behind by the chimpanzees the previous day.

Upon encountering the chimpanzees, you will be granted a full hour in the company of the chimpanzees studying their ways of life, behaviours taking pictures and videos to take back home.

Nyungwe forest is Rwanda’s most popular destination for chimpanzee trekking and the largest long stretch Montane rain forest in the whole of Africa at the moment: Because of the concentration of chimpanzees in this forest the destination therefore attracts many Researchers and tourists who come to Africa to see and study primates.

The National Park is also part of the wider Nyungwe Forest National Park which also includes Cyamudengo Forest. Nyungwe forest is not only known for chimpanzees, but also for variety of other primate species and about 310 bird species including the purple breasted sun birds, red coloured Mountain Bubblers Rwenzori Turacos among others.

The chimpanzee tracking experience in Nyungwe forest

Your chimpanzee trekking day starts at 5:00 am at your Safari lodge of residence for breakfast. After breakfast, you will meet with your guide and transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing about chimpanzee trekking from Experienced rangers. With the leadership of the ranger guide, you will embark on a trekking journey into the heart of Nyungwe forest in search of the chimps.

Upon encountering the chimpanzee, you will be allowed to stay with them for a full hour observing and studying the ways of life. In that one hour, you are allowed to take so many pictures and videos.

Fascinating about chimpanzees is the fact that they are man’s closest relative, having many of the human traits and almost sharing many things in common with human beings. chimpanzees are believed to be as intelligent as human beings.

Besides Nyungwe forest, Rwanda has got to some other two destinations where chimpanzees trekking can take place. These include Cyamudengo forest and Gishwati Makuru National Parks. Gishwati Mukura National Park has got almost 400 Chimpanzee individuals with another 13 primate species added to the mix.
