Ever since the first habituated gorilla family opened for gorilla trekking in 1993, Uganda has had 23 years of gorilla tourism. According to records, the first group of visitors to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park occurred in 1993 when the northern portion of the gorilla family under formal opening for gorilla treking was visited. Since then, fresh developments in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park need attention regarding gorilla tourism.
Changes throughout the 23 years of gorilla tourism
This has resulted in additional visitor licenses, therefore guiding 23 years of gorilla tourism growth in Uganda.
Still in 23 years of gorilla tourism in Uganda and owing to great demand for gorilla permits, the price has been rising steadily from USD 350 to USD500 and to the present USD800 per gorilla permit in peak season. Uganda Wildlife Authority has also made several creative changes wherein a gorilla permit costs USD450.00 during low seasons of April, May and November 2016-17. Over 23 years of Gorilla tourism in Uganda, all of these have served to boost the number of visitors arriving to hike gorillas.
Over 23 years of gorilla tourism, many lodges have sprung up in all four areas of Bwindi Impenetrable national park: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo. This has meant that depending on their budget, visitors and tour companies now have access to carefully chosen mid-range, upscale hotel facilities.
While some roads are currently under government review, others have been improved. Travelers from Entebbe to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park may now fly for the first time in 23 years of gorilla travel.
