When Booking Chimp Habituation Permits, Avoid These Mistakes.
Following a colony of wild chimpanzees along with a team of researchers and rangers, Chimp Habituation is a trekking adventure in Uganda’s jungle. To participate the whole day, one needs schedule a chimp habituation permit with Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).
Either UWA or a licensed tour operator may book the permit straight-forward. Whatever decision you pick, you have to avoid the typical errors covered below. Otherwise, someone traveling hundreds of kilometers across continents may find securing chimpanzee habituation permits and safari quite challenging.
Experiences with chimp trekking and habituation are diverse.
First of all, before deciding on your chimpanzee trip in Uganda, you have to separate chimp habituation from the usual trekking activities among chimpanzees.
Uganda’s Kibale National Park in western Uganda and Budongo Forest in the northwest close to Murchison Falls National Park provide both activities. Both call for guided jungle hiking.
Still, the chimp habituation experience lets guests spend almost the full day with a wild chimpanzee troop. Still, the frequent chimpanzee trekking will allow guests to spend as most one hour staying with a habituated troop.
A permit for the chimp habituation costs ($300 in Kibale and $230 in Budongo) more than a chimpanzee trekking permit ($300 in Kibale and $85 in Budongo).
You should be aware that chimp habituation results in the primates not being totally habituated to human presence. They are thus unpredictable and need that you follow their movements all through the day. By contrast, the one-hour encounter takes you almost to a fully-habituated troop that would not resent your presence and might remain quiet for your viewing.
You therefore have to be physically ready to follow a troop of wild chimpanzees all day long in an unmanaged environment devoid of clear paths from nightfall to morning. Book a chimp habituation permit at the incorrect location not wise.
As we have noted, Uganda only has two chimp habituation sites—Kibale and Budongo Forests. Though the Kibale permit is more costly, Kibale National Park offers a greater experience than Budongo.
In the end, the hunt for the lowest cost might provide a disappointing experience; so, you should discuss with your trip operator which option will meet your expectations and financial limit.
Arguably the finest area for primate encounters is Kibale National Park in the foothill of the Rwenzori mountains, north of Queen Elizabeth National Park in western Uganda. Scientists have conducted studies on chimpanzees in a natural habitat nowhere other than in Kibale Forest.
Comprising 13 additional primates as well as many other animal species, birds, and vegetation, the park has the largest concentration of primates on the continent.
Many visitors choose Kibale because of its great beauty and biodiversity; however, Kibale chimp habituation licenses are rare. Thus, avoid the error of reserving your permit right at last-minute. Months before the trip, start organizing and bookings.
Kibale also has the advantage of Budongo as the area offers plenty of lodging choices close by the park. Thirty percent of the permit fees are used by UWA to reserve chimp habituation permits for up to four months to the date of the activity; the remaining balance and full payment is then required. Three months before the trip, the whole amount is non-refundable.
You can only save seventy-percent of the costs for a reservation, hence pay them four months before the event. If you change your mind two months ahead, however, you will most certainly lose more than 75% of your money, and all of it if you miss or arrive late.
