Detailed Itinerary: 5‑Day Bwindi Forest & Double Gorilla Trek (Gorilla families, forest walk)
Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Your safari begins with arrival at Entebbe or Kampala, followed by a scenic drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The journey takes you through lush countryside, rolling hills, and rural villages, offering a glimpse into Uganda’s rural lifestyle. Upon arrival at your lodge near the forest, you settle in, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the exciting gorilla trekking activities ahead.
Day 2: Preparation and Optional Forest Walk
Day two provides an opportunity to acclimatize and enjoy light forest exploration. After breakfast, you may participate in a guided forest walk, which introduces you to the park’s flora, birdlife, and smaller primates. This gentle walk is perfect for understanding Bwindi’s ecology and preparing physically and mentally for the upcoming gorilla treks. In the afternoon, guides provide a detailed briefing about the double gorilla trek, including safety measures, trekking etiquette, and what to expect while observing gorillas in the wild. Evening is spent relaxing at the lodge.
Day 3: First Gorilla Trek
Day three is the highlight of your safari with the first gorilla trek. After an early breakfast, you report to the park headquarters for registration and a briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. You then trek through dense rainforest in search of a habituated gorilla family. The trek can last several hours, depending on the gorillas’ location and terrain. Once located, you spend one hour observing the gorilla family, witnessing their feeding, playing, and social interactions. After the trek, you return to the lodge to rest and reflect on this once-in-a-lifetime wildlife experience.
Day 4: Second Gorilla Trek
On day four, you embark on the second gorilla trek, visiting a different habituated gorilla family. This additional trek allows you to compare gorilla behaviors, social structures, and personalities across families, enhancing your understanding and appreciation of these gentle giants. Guides accompany you, sharing detailed insights into gorilla ecology, forest conservation, and ongoing protection efforts. After a rewarding trek, you return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay, celebrating the unique double gorilla experience.
Day 5: Return to Entebbe and Departure
On the final day, you enjoy breakfast before beginning the return journey to Entebbe or Kampala. The scenic drive through southwestern Uganda offers final glimpses of terraced hills, forested valleys, and local villages.
