Detailed Itinerary: 3‑Day Kigali City & Gorilla Trekking Safari
Day 1: Kigali City Exploration
The safari begins with a guided city tour of Kigali, allowing you to understand Rwanda’s past and present before heading into the wilderness. The day typically includes visits to key landmarks that reflect the country’s history, resilience, and rapid development.
Exploring Kigali reveals a city that is calm yet dynamic, with green neighborhoods, cultural centers, and local markets that showcase everyday life. The city tour offers meaningful context, deepening appreciation for Rwanda’s transformation and its commitment to unity and growth.
In the afternoon, you enjoy a relaxed lunch and continue exploring selected neighborhoods or viewpoints overlooking the city. The evening is spent at leisure, with time to rest and prepare for the following day’s journey to the mountains.
Day 2: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Day two begins with a scenic drive from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park, located in northwestern Rwanda. The journey takes you through rolling hills, rural villages, and cultivated farmland, highlighting the country’s nickname as the “Land of a Thousand Hills.”
Upon arrival near the park, you check in to your lodge, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Virunga volcanoes. The cooler climate and forested surroundings create a peaceful atmosphere, ideal for relaxation.
The afternoon is spent at leisure, allowing time to enjoy lodge facilities, take short nature walks, or simply admire the volcanic scenery. An early night is recommended to prepare for the gorilla trekking experience the following morning.
Day 3: Gorilla Trekking and Departure
The final day is dedicated to the highlight of the safari, gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park. After an early breakfast, you transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing by experienced rangers.
You are assigned to a habituated gorilla family and begin the trek into the forest, guided by trackers and rangers. The trek varies in duration and difficulty depending on the gorillas’ location, but the experience is well-managed and supported.
Encountering mountain gorillas in their natural habitat is a deeply moving moment. Observing their interactions, expressions, and behavior at close range creates a strong emotional connection. You are allowed one hour with the gorillas, ensuring a respectful and controlled encounter.
After the trek, you return to the park headquarters and begin the drive back to Kigali. Depending on your travel schedule, you may proceed directly to the airport or return to your hotel, marking the end of the safari.
