Detailed Itinerary: 2‑Day Volcanoes Gorilla Trekking Safari
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali – Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
The safari begins with arrival in Kigali, where you are met by your professional safari guide at Kigali International Airport or picked up from your hotel. After a short city briefing, you depart northwards toward Volcanoes National Park, passing rolling hills, rural settlements, and terraced landscapes that define Rwanda as the Land of a Thousand Hills.
The drive offers scenic views of the Virunga volcanoes as you approach Musanze, the gateway town to the park. Upon arrival, you check in at your lodge and enjoy lunch while overlooking the forested slopes. The afternoon is reserved for rest and acclimatization, which is essential for the next day’s trek. Depending on arrival time, an optional cultural visit or nature walk may be arranged near the lodge. Dinner and overnight are spent close to the park, surrounded by cool mountain air and volcanic scenery.
Day 2: Volcanoes National Park – Gorilla Trekking – Return to Kigali
The highlight of the safari unfolds early in the morning with breakfast followed by transfer to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for a mandatory gorilla trekking briefing. Here, park rangers assign trekking groups based on fitness levels and explain gorilla behavior, safety guidelines, and conservation rules.
You then enter the rainforest with experienced guides, trekking through bamboo zones and dense vegetation in search of a habituated mountain gorilla family. Trekking time varies depending on gorilla movements, but the reward is an unforgettable one-hour encounter spent observing gorillas feeding, resting, and interacting at close range. This experience is deeply emotional and widely regarded as one of Africa’s most powerful wildlife encounters.
After the trek, you return to the lodge for lunch and a short rest before beginning the drive back to Kigali. Arrival is later in the afternoon or early evening, marking the end of a brief yet extraordinary gorilla trekking safari.
