What to Pack for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda Ultimate Guide

What to Pack for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda: The Complete 2026 Guide

What to pack for gorilla trekking in Uganda. Are you ready for the adventure of a lifetime? Standing just a few meters away from a giant mountain gorilla is a feeling you will never forget. Uganda is home to half of the world’s mountain gorillas, making it the best place for this experience.

However, the jungle is not like a city park. It is thick, hilly, and the weather changes every few minutes. If you do not have the right gear, your dream trip could become very uncomfortable. To help you get ready, Katland Safaris has put together this detailed guide on what to pack for gorilla trekking in Uganda.

Why Your Packing List Matters

Gorilla trekking takes place in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. These are tropical rainforests. The ground can be slippery, the trees have thorns, and it can rain even when the sun is shining. Having the right clothes and tools keeps you safe and dry so you can focus on the gorillas.

Essential Clothing for the Jungle

When thinking about what to wear, remember two things: protection and layers. You want to cover your skin to avoid insect bites and scratches from plants.

Long-Sleeved Shirts and Trousers

Never wear shorts or short-sleeved shirts during the trek. The forest has “stinging nettles” and sharp branches.

  • Material: Choose lightweight, “moisture-wicking” fabrics that dry quickly. Avoid heavy denim jeans because they become very heavy and cold when wet.
  • Colors: Stick to “safari colors” like khaki, green, or brown. Avoid bright colors like red or yellow, as they can attract insects. Note: It is illegal to wear camouflage (military style) clothing in Uganda.
  • Sturdy Hiking Boots

This is perhaps the most important item on your list. You will be walking on steep, muddy slopes.

  • Grip: Your boots must have a very good “tread” or grip to stop you from sliding.
  • Ankle Support: Choose boots that cover your ankles to prevent twists.
  • Waterproof: Ensure they are waterproof so your feet stay dry when crossing small streams or walking through mud.
  1. Long Socks

Pack a few pairs of thick, comfortable socks. A top tip from our guides: tuck your trousers into your socks. This stops “safari ants” from crawling up your legs.

  1. A Lightweight Rain Jacket

It is called a rainforest for a reason! Even in the “dry season,” it can rain at any time. A light, breathable rain jacket or poncho is a must-have. Make sure it fits easily into your backpack.

Important Gear and Accessories for Gorilla Trekking.

Beyond clothes, you need specific gear to make the hike easier.

  1. Gardening Gloves

It may sound strange, but gardening gloves are a lifesaver. When the path is steep, you will often grab trees or vines for support. Some of these plants have thorns. Strong gloves will protect your hands.

  1. A Waterproof Daypack

You need a small backpack to carry your lunch, water, and camera. It must be waterproof or have a rain cover. You don’t want your expensive electronics getting wet.

  1. Trekking Poles or Walking Sticks

The terrain in Bwindi is very hilly. A walking stick gives you balance. If you don’t have your own, don’t worry—Katland Safaris can help you get a local wooden walking stick at the start of the trek.

  1. Wide-Brimmed Hat and Sunglasses

When the sun comes out, it is very strong. A hat protects your face from sunburn and also keeps rain out of your eyes.

Health and Protection Items

Staying healthy is key to enjoying your safari.

Insect Repellent

The jungle has many insects, including mosquitoes and tsetse flies. Use a repellent with “DEET” for the best protection. Apply it to your skin and your clothes.

Sunscreen and Lip Balm

Even under the trees, the African sun is powerful. Apply sunscreen before you start your hike.

Hand Sanitizer and Face Masks

To protect the gorillas from human diseases, you are required to wear a face mask when you are close to them. This is for their safety, as they share 98% of our DNA.

Photography and Electronics

You will want to take many photos, but there are rules to follow.

  1. Camera with Extra Batteries

You will be in the forest for several hours. Cold weather can drain batteries faster. Always bring a spare.

Turn Off Your Flash

You are not allowed to use a flash when taking photos of gorillas. It can scare them or make them angry. Ensure you know how to turn your flash off before you reach the gorillas.

  1. Binoculars

If you love birds or want to see other primates like monkeys high in the trees, a pair of binoculars is very helpful.

Food and Water

Gorilla trekking can take anywhere from 2 to 7 hours. You need to keep your energy up.

  1. Plenty of Drinking Water

Bring at least 2 liters of water. It is humid in the forest, and you will sweat a lot.

  1. Packed Lunch and Energy Snacks

Your lodge will usually provide a packed lunch. We also recommend bringing “energy-giving” snacks like nuts, dried fruit, or chocolate bars for a quick boost during the hike.

Administrative Essentials

You cannot enter the forest without the right paperwork.

  1. Gorilla Trekking Permit

This is your “ticket” to see the gorillas. In 2026, a permit for a foreign non-resident costs $800 USD. These permits sell out fast, so you should book them 3 to 6 months in advance.

  1. Passport Copies

The park rangers will need to see your passport or a clear copy to verify your permit at the briefing point.

Hiring a Porter: A Great Idea

When you reach the start of the trek, you will see local people called porters. You can hire one for about $20 USD.

  • They carry your heavy backpack.
  • They give you a hand when the ground is slippery.
  • By hiring them, you are supporting the local community. Even if you feel fit, a porter makes the experience much more relaxing.

What Not to Pack

To keep the forest clean and the gorillas safe, please avoid these:

  • Single-use plastic bags: These are banned in Uganda.
  • Strong perfumes: Gorillas have a very sensitive sense of smell.
  • Loud colors: These can distract the animals.
