What to know about Golden Monkeys.
Golden monkeys possess special and distinctive characteristics unique to other monkey species. These golden monkeys are the most tracked in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Golden Monkey tracking in Rwanda is done from two destinations; that’s from the Volcanos Mountains and also from the Sabinyo areas.
The Sabinyo areas have the largest group of golden Monkeys totalling a total of between 80 and 100 monkeys. The Golden monkey families in Sabinyo are the most visited in Rwanda, attracting many primate travellers from many parts of the world. The other golden monkey families are found in the volcano, but attracts less visitors compared to the one in Sabinyo:

The act of trekking with golden monkeys
A normal Golden monkey trekking adventure in Rwanda starts at exactly 7 am in the morning with a briefing at the park headquarters from the rangers and Guides. The briefing will center around the dos and don’ts of Golden monkey trekking.
After the briefing, the journey of Golden monkey trekking will then start with the grand entrance in the jungle in Search of the Golden Monkeys and other primates. If luck is on your side.
Because the primates are very Curious and very playful animals, sometimes touching them becomes a challenge, and therefore guides follow the fresh bamboo shoots that were left behind when eating, until they are located.
Once you encounter the golden monkeys, you will be granted a full hour with the golden monkeys, observing their way of life, taking pictures, and videos.
The Cost of Tracking Golden Monkeys in Rwanda.
The Permit to trek Golden Monkeys costs 100 usd per person, and the permit is issued by the Rwanda Development board allowing you access to the golden monkey destination. The permit fr Golden Monkey trekking includes all the park entrance fees, ranger guide fees, and allowance of a full one hour observing the Golden Monkeys.
What to carry for a Golden Monkey Tracking Safari:Â
Every tropical rainforest is fully surrounded by slippery trails, muddy grounds, rainfall, wet vegetation, steep slopes, and mosquito bites. Therefore, you must always manage the following items:
Carry insect repellent to stay safe. Guard yourself from dangerous insects like tsetse flies and mosquitoes, among other dangerous insects.
Pack a pair of both long-sleeved shirts and long trousers
Include a rain Jacket in case it rains while in the Jungle
Include a hat or headcap and wear strong hiking boots
Carry a waterproof bag – Can be used for keeping your camera and other electronic devices
Carry a walking stick – You can hire one from the ranger or use your hotel to help you move easily and safely while trekking.
