Explore Mgahinga volcanoes and gorillas.

Tucked away in Uganda`s southwestern corner, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is a hidden gem where adventure, wildlife, and natural beauty come together in one breathtaking destination. It`s the only place in Uganda where travellers can experience the thrilling combination of mountain gorilla trekking and volcanic hiking all within a compact conservation area, shared with Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Meet the gentle giants in Mgahinga National Park.

Mgahinga is home to the Nyakagezi Gorilla family, a habituated group that allows visitors to witness the daily life of the endangered mountain gorillas up close. Trekking begins early in the morning at the Ntereko visitors centre, where visitors are briefed before embarking on a guided forest hike. The journey takes you through dense Bamboo forests and lush montane vegetation, where you encounter wildlife such as elephants and colourful bird species. Once the gorillas are found, visitors are allowed one magical hour observing their interactions, play, and grooming habits, a humbling and emotional experience that creates a lifelong connection with nature.

Conquer the Virunga volcanoes hiking adventures.

Mgahinga offers thrilling treks up to three majestic volcanoes mount Sabyinyo, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Muhabura. Each mountain offers a unique challenge and rewards climbers with the chance to stand at the three border points where Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo meet.

Mount Gahinga offers a moderate climb through Bamboo forests where golden monkeys often appear, with a crater at the summit.

Mount Muhabura is the tallest and most demanding, but its summit provides breathtaking views of the Virunga range and beyond.

The volcano hikes not only test your endurance but also immerse you in diverse ecosystems from the bamboo zone to Alpine meadows rich with rare plants and bird life.

Cultural encounters.

Beyond wildlife and hiking, Mgahinga offers a chance to connect with the Batwa people, the forest dwellers. Through the Batwa cultural trail, visitors can learn about their traditional hunting methods, herbal medicine, and incident stories inside the sacred Garuma cave.

Bird watching

The park is a bird`s paradise with over 180 bird species, making it a fantastic destination for bird watchers, especially those seeking Albertine rift endemics like the Rwenzori Turaco and white-starred Robin.

Best time to visit the park.

The best time to explore Mgahinga is during the dry seasons, June and September, and December to February, when hiking and tracking conditions are most favourable. The trails are less slippery, and visibility is excellent for photography and sightseeing. However, the park remains open year-round, and even during the rainy seasons, it offers lush green landscapes and fewer crowds.

How to get to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is located in the south-western part of Uganda, about 510km from Kampala, and can be reached either by road or air.
