Detailed Itinerary: 9 days Rwenzori trekking safari

Day 1: Transfer to Rwenzori Mountains National Park and Trek to Nyabitaba Hut

Your Rwenzori trekking safari begins with a transfer from Kampala or Entebbe to Rwenzori Mountains National Park. The journey takes you through western Uganda, passing scenic countryside, tea plantations, and the foothills of the Rwenzori range.

After registration and briefing at the park headquarters, you begin your trek through tropical rainforest toward Nyabitaba Hut. The trail introduces you to the lower slopes of the mountains, rich in birdlife and forest vegetation.

Day 2: Nyabitaba Hut to John Matte Hut

Today’s trek takes you deeper into the heart of the Rwenzori Mountains. You cross the Mubuku River and climb steadily through bamboo zones and moss-covered forest. The landscape becomes more dramatic as giant lobelias and groundsels begin to appear.

Arrival at John Matte Hut marks your entry into the alpine zone, where misty views and cooler temperatures define the environment.

Day 3: John Matte Hut to Bujuku Hut

This is one of the most scenic days of the trek. You traverse the Bigo Bog, using wooden boardwalks to cross swampy terrain surrounded by towering giant lobelias. The scenery is otherworldly and unique to the Rwenzori Mountains.

The trek continues into the Bujuku Valley, where Bujuku Hut sits between Lake Bujuku and the surrounding peaks, offering stunning mountain views.

Day 4: Acclimatization and Exploration around Bujuku Valley

This day is dedicated to acclimatization and recovery. Spending extra time at altitude helps prepare your body for higher elevations while allowing you to explore the breathtaking Bujuku Valley.

Short hikes around Lake Bujuku and the surrounding ridges offer excellent photography opportunities and deeper appreciation of the Rwenzori’s unique alpine ecosystem.

Day 5: Bujuku Hut to Elena Hut

The trek becomes more demanding as you climb toward Elena Hut. The trail ascends steeply through rocky terrain and glacial landscapes, offering panoramic views of Mount Stanley and surrounding peaks.

Elena Hut is strategically positioned for climbers continuing toward higher summits, and the environment becomes distinctly alpine, with colder temperatures and dramatic scenery.

Day 6: Elena Hut to Kitandara Hut

Today’s route crosses high-altitude passes and rugged terrain. You traverse the Scott Elliott Pass, navigating rocky sections and steep climbs while enjoying sweeping views of the Rwenzori range.

Descending into the Kitandara Valley, you arrive at Kitandara Hut beside a stunning glacial lake, surrounded by towering peaks and alpine vegetation.

Day 7: Kitandara Hut to Guy Yeoman Hut

The trek continues across the Freshfield Pass before descending toward Guy Yeoman Hut. This section offers expansive views of glaciers, valleys, and distant peaks, highlighting the raw beauty of the Rwenzori Mountains.

Guy Yeoman Hut sits in a remote and peaceful setting, marking the final high-altitude overnight stop of the trek.

Day 8: Guy Yeoman Hut to Nyabitaba and Exit the Park

You begin the descent through alpine zones back into forested landscapes. The trail gradually transitions from rocky high-altitude terrain to bamboo and tropical forest.

After reaching Nyabitaba, you exit Rwenzori Mountains National Park, concluding the trekking portion of the safari.

Day 9: Return Transfer and Departure

The final day involves a return transfer to Kampala or Entebbe. The drive offers time to reflect on the achievement and unforgettable landscapes of the Rwenzori Mountains. Depending on your travel plans, you proceed to your hotel or connect to your onward flight.
