Overview
A 3-days golden monkeys and gorilla trekking safari in Rwanda delivers an intense and rewarding primate experience within a short timeframe, combining two of the country’s most iconic wildlife encounters in the dramatic landscapes of Volcanoes National Park. This safari is ideal for travelers who want close interaction with rare primates while enjoying Rwanda’s efficient travel routes and well-protected conservation areas.

Detailed Itinerary: 3-Days Golden-Monkeys and Gorilla-trekking in Rwanda
Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
The safari begins with arrival in Kigali, followed by a scenic drive to Volcanoes National Park, located in northwestern Rwanda. The journey takes you through rolling hills, rural villages, and cultivated landscapes that have earned Rwanda its reputation as the “Land of a Thousand Hills.”
Upon arrival near the park, you check in to your lodge, positioned to offer easy access to trekking points. The afternoon is spent at leisure, allowing time to relax, enjoy views of the Virunga volcanoes, and prepare for the trekking activities ahead.
As evening falls, the cooler mountain climate and quiet surroundings set the tone for the wildlife encounters that await.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
Day two is dedicated to the unforgettable experience of gorilla trekking in Rwanda. After an early breakfast, you transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing by Rwanda Development Board rangers.
You are assigned to a habituated gorilla family and guided into the forest by experienced trackers and rangers. The trek can vary in length and difficulty depending on the gorillas’ movements, but the terrain is generally manageable with proper preparation.
Encountering mountain gorillas in their natural habitat is a powerful moment. Observing their social interactions, gentle behavior, and physical presence at close range creates a deep emotional connection. You are allowed one hour with the gorillas, during which photography and observation are permitted under strict guidelines.
After the trek, you return to the lodge for lunch and a restful afternoon, allowing time to reflect on the experience.
Day 3: Golden Monkey Trekking and Departure
The final day focuses on golden monkey trekking, offering a lively and contrasting primate experience. After breakfast, you return to the park headquarters for another briefing before heading into the bamboo forest.
Golden monkeys are energetic and playful, moving quickly through the trees and on the forest floor. Their striking coloration and active behavior make the trek both exciting and visually rewarding. The experience is less physically demanding than gorilla trekking, making it a pleasant way to conclude the safari.
After completing the golden monkey trek, you begin the return journey to Kigali. Depending on your schedule, there may be time for a short city visit or cultural stop before transfer to the airport.
